PERSONAL REFLECTIONS:
Let me just say straight up...there is nothing that interesting about this site.
I mean, I'm sure it's exciting to railroad enthusiasts but me?...not so much
Although early plans called
for a two story building, early pictures show a 1 story building. Electricity
was added in 1909 and, finally, in 1916, a second story, said to be the living quarters
for the station master was added. Fires
in 1924 and 1930 caused damage but when rebuilt, the structure was built to the
original 1905 plan and in the same place. It was this keeping to the original
plan that allowed this site to become a National Historical Landmark.
Ashland station, considered by some to be the oldest
railroad depot west of the Mississippi, was moved from other side of river in
1972 and placed next to the Folsom Depot. This has been developed into a type
of "living" museum to the miners and railroad. You can watch an
actual blacksmith working and even learn how the miners panned for gold. I'm
sure I heard one of the docents answer a question that they probably get
several times each day...no, there isn't any gold in the dirt they are using.
I couldn't decide what I wanted for lunch and so walked up
and down all of Sutter Street before settling at The Black Rooster. I have to
say eating alone is not my favorite thing to do.
